Let’s face it: our children are the most high-priced gifts we could ever be entrusted with. We care about them and agonize whether as parents we are being too protective or not protective enough. From the first day we knew they were on their way, we took care of them as best as we could. Now they are toddlers, ‘big boys and girls’ as we keep praising them every time they amaze us with their progress as minuscule people. It is a special time of our lives, theirs too.

Sadly, too many of them never make it to their first day at school. As difficult as this is for a father of five to write, the reality is we will all know someone who has lost a child at some time in our journey straight through this life. As someone once said, parents should never have to bury their children, there are good reasons why it should be the other way around.

Bubby

One inquire my wife asked me recently was about our galvanic blanket. She comes from a tropical country where they call sheets ‘blankets’ so her first winter here was an instruction for all of us. She still hasn’t fully grasped the belief of layering clothes and tends to overheat the kids on mild days simply because to her it is Freezing!’ Of procedure when we vacation with her family I am sweating the occasion I step off the plane and she is always cool and serene.

Back to the galvanic blanket. She was involved that if one of the children climbed into our bed as they are want to do and had a minuscule accident, as also is want to happen as they transition from diapers to fully potty trained; would they short circuit the galvanic blanket and electrocute themselves?

I mentioned that if they did that we would be electrocuted also. She said she didn’t mind so long as the baby was ok and besides, she would roll off very quickly as she has fast reactions! Sweet but not very scientific. The reality is nobody can outrun an galvanic shock, we’re talking the speed of light here or close enough to it. The cable used and other materials will insulate to a degree and slow down the discharge. An unshielded copper conductor is about 95% the speed of light and a typical coaxial cable runs at ‘just’ 66% the speed of light. The speed of light is roughly 300,000 km or 186,000 miles per second. So two thirds of that is still faster than you can roll off the bed!

For an unexpected case of bed wetting to cause a short circuit in the galvanic blanket there would have to be an exposed live wire. Touching that would already cause a shock or even just a tingle so you would know about it long before bubby does a pee pee in the wedded bed. If your house has a circuit breaker fitted, and my house has the best I could afford five years ago when we moved in, it should switch off the power before the child or whatever else gets shocked.

The best cure is as always, prevention. Check your galvanic blanket for signs of wear and tear, particularly the operate units, the plug and where the cable enters the blanket and can be seen or felt inside. Any doubt whatsoever and you cut the plug off and dispose of the blanket thoughtfully. What do galvanic blankets cost today? Nothing compared to the value of your children.

Shop around, shop online and get a decent galvanic blanket you can trust under all circumstances. If you fit galvanic blankets to your kids’ beds, even older children, make sure you check and even turn them off at the wall (I unplug) so they don’t get too hot during the night. That can lead to kicking off the top covers and catching a chill. Use the galvanic blanket wisely and to warm the bed. Once warm and you are snuggled in, save the electricity and turn it down or unplug altogether. And visit the bathroom before bedtime.
